First field test for the new MOBITURN®3
In September 2024, HEGENSCHEIDT presented the MOBITURN®3, the further development and latest generation of the MOBITURN® mobile wheelset lathe, at the Innotrans trade fair for rail transport in Berlin. The aim of the development was to make the successful product even more powerful and flexible for the future. The machine has been completely redesigned for this purpose.

TECHNICAL ADAPTIONS
The wheelset clamping system, consisting of the roller carrier, the guide rollers and the hold-down devices, has been adapted to the geometry of the HEGENSCHEIDT U2000-150 underfloor wheelset lathe. A reduced friction roller spacing and the use of the proven guide rollers of the U2000-150 should be emphasized here, with the help of which low-floor vehicles can now also be reprofiled on the MOBITURN®. The use of familiar units from the underfloor wheelset turning machines ensures integration into the existing modular system. A new drive concept provides just as much support as the machine control system with the latest generation of software, which has also been extensively updated and offers future-oriented options. The operator benefits from a new, tidy workplace with increased headroom and a large viewing area of the machining area, which can be seen at all times thanks to the new lighting concept. Side sliding doors ensure unobstructed access to the cutting area, even while the MOBITURN® is positioned between the lifting jacks of the rail vehicle. A new feature is the optional handling system for hold-down devices, which relieves the operator during the wheel set clamping process. The optional central lubrication system significantly reduces maintenance costs. The rear area of the machine has been restructured so that the hydraulic power supply can now be removed from the cutting area. This enables improved regulation of the operating temperature, even in demanding ambient conditions, as well as a clear arrangement of the control elements. A shortened center distance ensures easier and safer maneuverability even on tight track curves. However, the most striking and immediately recognizable innovation of the MOBITURN®3 is the modern and appealing design of the machine.

FIRST FIELD TEST
Following the successful presentation of the machine at the trade fair, it underwent an extensive test and validation phase in the factory, which was concluded with its first use in the maintenance plant of our customer RWE in Frechen. As part of this, the entire machine and its software were subjected to a practical test. In addition, the use of new tools was tested, which support chip breaking better than before. The results are impressive, as is the new chip container, which can now be easily removed from three sides thanks to its simple design. It was particularly pleasing that the application was carried out by a specialist from the field, who had already provided significant impetus for further development at the start of the project. This meant that “the new one” could be compared with the MOBITURN®2 on site under real conditions. The conclusion of this comparison attests to a successful project, the result of which delivers interesting innovations and a platform for the mobile wheelset processing of tomorrow.
